Asset Building Commission
Helping Youth SucceedWelcome to our web site! We are the Asset Building Coalition (ABC) of Monroe County, Indiana. Our mission is to promote asset-building and life skills toward improving the quality of life for our community. We collaborate with community partners and mobilize community resources. Established in 1995, our guiding principles are based upon the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets. The Search Institute identified what it takes for youth to be healthy, caring, principled and productive. (Search Institute). The ABC focuses on increasing Assets among the youth in our community as a prevention strategy for alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. Healthy communities begin with healthy youth.  Anyone can be an asset builder! Assets in ActionAsset #16: High Expectations Kids will live up to your expectations. Communicating your expectations in a positive way helps create the environment in which your child can succeed. Simple things like knowing how they can contribute to the running of the household, knowing that doing school work is a priority and knowing that tolerance and respect for others is a value that you hold, are some examples. Catch your kid doing something right! Saying things like, "I really appreciate you setting the table," "thanks for asking me about my day," and "thanks for starting your science project early" reinforce your high expectations.
