Strategic Prevention Framework/State Incentive Grant (SPF/SIG)

The Monroe County Commissioners and the Asset Building Coalition were awarded the four year SPF/SIG grant in July 2007. Alcohol, specifically underage and binge drinking is the priority under which our community received funding by the Indiana Strategic Prevention Framework from the Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The Coalition’s efforts to reduce underage and binge drinking among 18- to 25-year-olds in our community is titled Project 1825.

Department of Education Alcohol Grant

The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education in July 2008. This three year grant supports evidence-based programs and strategies to reduce alcohol use among Monroe County high school students. The grant is in partnership with Richland Bean Blossom Community School Corporation, Monroe County Asset Building Coalition and the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce Franklin Initiative.
In addition to in-school education, the grant includes a critical component: Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA). CMCA is a community-organizing program designed to reduce adolescent access to alcohol by changing community policies and practices. CMCA seek both to effectively limit the access to alcohol to people under the legal drinking age and to communicate a clear message to the community that underage drinking is inappropriate and unacceptable. The Asset Building Coalition is taking the lead in organizing the CMCA efforts in Monroe County. The CMCA reflects a partnership of the Coalition with the MCCSC through their Department of Education Grant to Reduce Alcohol Abuse and Project 1825 funded through the Strategic Prevention Framework/State Incentive Grant.
